Restoring the Cottage Grove Armory
“Let’s Make History”

Since its construction for the Oregon National Guard in 1931, the Cottage Grove Armory has also served as hub of activity in a classic downtown, hosting sporting events, graduation ceremonies, dances, concerts and more. But the Armory needs support from the community and major restoration work to return to its former glory.

Following the National Guard’s relocation in 2009, the City of Cottage Grove purchased the beautiful Art Deco building and, with community support, is committed to its restoration, a project that will take place over the next several years.

A restored Armory will enrich a historic downtown Main Street, while boosting the local economy and once again providing an ideal building for hosting some of Cottage Grove’s premier events.

Honoring The Past

Cottage Grove Armory As headquarters for the National Guard’s HHC 2-162 Company, the Armory served as a key stop in countless military careers, and many a young soldier waved farewell to loved ones from its iconic steps. The citizens of Cottage Grove did their part to bring the Armory to town — even among the trying times of the Great Depression, they passed a $15,000 bond for its construction because they understood the community’s need for the space and range of activities that only the Armory could host.

Potential In the Present

The need for a large indoor space to hold a variety of events is still keenly felt today, and the Armory is Cottage Grove’s best — in fact, its only — option for hosting large gatherings. Recently, it has hosted a get-together of model train fans, the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet and the Mayor’s Ball, a celebration to kick off the Armory fundraising campaign that showcased the building in all its finery and highlighted its future potential.

But time has taken its toll on the Armory, and the building will require restoration of its iconic façade, a new boiler, restroom upgrades and work to improve access for those with disabilities, in addition to improvements to bring the Armory current with today’s building code standards before it can reach its full potential.

Focused on the Future

Following its restoration, the Armory can serve as Cottage Grove’s emergency shelter, as home to local youth organizations and other community groups, as well as a commercial kitchen. Much like the original construction project that brought the Armory to Cottage Grove, a coordinated community effort will be vital in its renovation. Here are a few ways you can do your part:

Volunteer

There are many ways to contribute your time and talents to the Armory restoration effort. Volunteer help will be especially welcome for events such as an annual Ice Cream Social in August and the Mayor’s Ball, which takes place in October.
