Name the Bridge

Swinging Bridge

The reconstruction of the bridge commonly known as the "Swinging Bridge" is nearing completion. As the City was preparing for the re-opening of the bridge the history of the name of the bridge was found. The bridge was named by the City Council on June 14, 1965 as the Currin Bridge.

A concern has been expressed that there is another bridge in the area named the Currin Bridge. Currently with the City and County tourism efforts both bridges are listed and promoted as attractions. Having two bridges named Currin Bridge can be confusing even though one bridge is a covered bridge and the other a suspension bridge.

The Swinging Bridge was named the Currin Bridge after J. Polk Currin a local pioneer pharmacist who was responsible for constructing the first bridge in the general area for public to access a small park he created in the late 1800 - early 1900's.

The City Council is considering modifying the existing name or even creating a new name for the new bridge that is nearing completion in order to differentiate the bridge from the other Currin Bridge.
